The following characteristics are considered disqualifications and should be severely bred against
- Any red coloration expressed on any feather. Keep a close eye on the hackle, saddle, and wing on the male, and the hackle on the female.
- Blue coloration. No blue can be expressed on any feather.
- White skin. There are still a few white skinned birds. While these birds should never enter the showring, they may be of value if the type is good. However, these birds should never be sold to prospective buyers.
